PRIORITIES FOR NC

The Attorney General serves as North Carolina’s chief legal officer and leads the North Carolina Department of Justice.

Don Brown’s priorities for the office center on four areas: defending constitutional principles, supporting public safety and the rule of law, protecting consumers, and enforcing North Carolina’s election laws.

DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION

Constitutional principles should guide the Attorney General’s office.

Don believes one of the Attorney General’s most important responsibilities is defending North Carolina, its laws, and the constitutional rights of its citizens.

As Attorney General, Don’s stated priorities would include defending duly enacted North Carolina laws in court, challenging federal actions he believes exceed constitutional authority, protecting individual constitutional rights, and opposing misuse of the legal system for political purposes.
His approach would emphasize issues including due process, free speech, religious liberty, Second Amendment rights, and state sovereignty.

The principle: The Constitution comes first.

PROMOTING LAW & ORDER

Support law enforcement. Protect victims. Uphold the law.

The North Carolina Department of Justice plays an important role in public safety, including handling criminal appeals, operating the State Crime Lab, training law enforcement, and providing assistance to district attorneys.

Don’s priorities include supporting local prosecutors with legal resources and training, effectively using Department of Justice and State Crime Lab resources, and focusing attention on violent crime, gangs, drug trafficking, and crimes against vulnerable North Carolinians.
He also wants the Attorney General’s office to build strong working relationships with sheriffs, police departments, prosecutors, first responders, and other public-safety partners throughout the state.

The principle: Justice should be based on the law and the evidence.

PROTECTING NORTH CAROLINA CONSUMERS

Protecting your rights also means protecting you from fraud and abuse.

North Carolina families, seniors, and small businesses can become targets of scams, fraud, predatory practices, and other unlawful conduct.

Don’s consumer-protection priorities include enforcing North Carolina's consumer-protection and unfair-trade-practices laws, addressing fraud and data-privacy violations, pursuing bad actors when North Carolinians have been harmed, and seeking restitution where appropriate.

He also supports consumer education and accessible resources that help North Carolinians recognize scams before they become victims.
Don believes consumer protection should be aggressive where misconduct occurs while avoiding unnecessary regulatory expansion that burdens law-abiding North Carolina businesses.

The principle: Protect North Carolinians without punishing businesses that play by the rules.

ELECTION INTEGRITY

Every lawful vote deserves to be counted accurately and securely.

Public confidence in elections depends on election laws being enforced consistently and election administration being transparent.
Don’s priorities include enforcing North Carolina election laws, addressing substantiated violations, defending lawful election-security measures in court, and supporting secure election procedures involving areas such as audits, chain of custody, and voter-roll maintenance.

He also supports cooperation among the Attorney General’s office, election administrators, and appropriate state and local officials within their respective legal responsibilities.

The principle: Election laws should be enforced fairly, consistently, and transparently.
